You will already know that Baaba Maal is one of Africa’s true international stars, his extraordinary stature growing with each album in a global career that now stretches back some two decades.
That reputation has been forged not simply through the excellence of Maal’s studio recordings but also the compulsive and hypnotic qualities of his live performances.
His concerts have a rare ability to transcend cultures and expectations, a music simultaneously rooted in the ancient African soils while fuelled by the burgeoning vitality and sheer inventiveness of the continent’s people. Perhaps it was ever thus – two millennia ago a Roman historian remarked that “out of Africa, always something new”.
The clearest evidence of Maal’s remarkable shows comes with ‘Baaba Maal on the Road’, a selection of live performances collated from concerts around the world over the past ten years.
Although Maal’s music has embraced everything from electric bands to 70-piece orchestras, it is his intimate acoustic performances which, for many, properly encompass the very real contagious nature of Maal’s work. It is this raw emotional edge that is showcased on the eight tracks featured on this album.
Included are live versions of a few of the finest songs in Maal’s repertoire plus three collectors’ items – a song called ‘Iyango’ which has never been recorded before, together with ‘Farba’, a tune that’s appeared only on an Africa-only cassette release, and the hard to get ‘Bamba’.
What makes the album even more significant is the extraordinary genius of kora maestro, the late Kaouding Cissoko, providing the most melodic and delicate of frameworks for Maal’s magisterial voice. For an added bonus, ‘Koni’ features the immaculate guitar work of Jamaican legend Ernest Ranglin, a contribution that emphasises Maal’s openness to working with musicians from different cultures and countries.
‘Baaba Maal on the Road’ therefore adds yet more pieces to the glorious lexicon that is the artist’s life and work. From Senegal to the world – long may the road continue.
